Unico to Enter New HVAC Markets, Offer More New Products in 2015


ST. LOUIS — On the heels of a successful 2014 that featured six new product launches and a partnership with an overseas manufacturer, Unico, Inc. is set to make 2015 an even bigger year for innovation and expansion. With 13 products in the wings, another international partnership, plans to enter new markets, and a goal to train 5,000 distributors and installers, Unico is poised for its biggest year yet in the company’s 30-year history as a manufacturer of small-duct heating and air conditioning systems.

“Innovation is in the air here at Unico,” said Scott Intagliata, marketing director at Unico. “It seems everyone from engineering to sales to customer service have new ideas that merit discussion. We are all focused on developing solutions to bring our customers better air quality, better efficiency, easier installation and lower energy costs, and the good news is that every one of our new products will achieve one or more of these goals.”

Unico’s 13 new products will be launched at various times in 2015. Each is undergoing rigorous testing and quality control steps to ensure their performance and safety. The products that will be introduced first are:

  • UniZone line of in-duct motorized dampers for precise temperature control,
  • eMix indoor unit for high-efficiency domestic hot water production, and
  • UniLight, a combination LED light and round Unico outlet.

“All of our new products will fully integrate with our existing equipment,” Intagliata said. “That means installers trained on the Unico System will be able to easily offer the products as valuable add-ons that further enhance efficiency or provide more design options.”

Of great significance, Unico will begin manufacturing Diffusion brand fan coils as a franchisee of British manufacturer Energy Technique plc.  Diffusion has supplied fan coils and commercial heating products to the UK heating and ventilation industry for more than 50 years. “The products extend our air handling offering further in to the commercial space, “ said Intagliata. “For years, our products have been used in commercial applications, and with the sale of Diffusion products, we anticipate setting up a new distribution channel that focuses on this area.”

The company has also decided to focus on the log and timber home market in 2015.  “With the economic recovery, we’re seeing a renewed interest in these types of homes,” Intagliata said. “Unico has enjoyed good success in this market for more than a decade; homeowners love the fact that our flexible ducting can be hidden inside the log walls, which eliminates the need for soffits.  We’re looking forward to introducing our iSeries line of mini-splits and outdoor inverter units to log home manufacturers and builders. The iSeries gives them even more flexibility in design and construction.”

Unico plans to pursue more Zero Energy and LEED home opportunities, as well as introduce their products to cool computer rooms. This year will also see Unico’s first planned entry into the commercial market, with a focus on historic buildings.

“While the Unico System can be found in a number of commercial structures, we are now increasing our attention on marketing the Unico System to preservationists and renovators of historic properties,” Intagliata said. “Our success in older homes has been our mainstay for 30 years, and that won’t change, but we want to get more involved in the commercial market.”
