Thornton & Grooms Raises Bar on Health and Wellness

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — Thornton & Grooms Heating, Cooling, & Plumbing is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to focusing on health and wellness. These days health benefits aren't always promised with a new job but can be an unused employee benefit when included.

Thornton & Grooms has found a way to shine a spotlight on health that gets employees using their benefits while building a healthier workforce, in a profession that is known to be hard on the plumbers and technicians dedicated to it.

This year, getting an annual physical will reap great rewards for employees at Thornton & Grooms. Thornton & Grooms will purchase a Fitbit Flex for every employee who schedules and completes their annual physical. Five employees have already completed the task since the announcement weeks ago. There are also prizes for employees who had their annual physicals last year.

Many companies that offer benefits can partner with their health coverage providers to offer different programs to employees like Thornton & Grooms has done with the Health Alliance Plan (HAP). They've created a Wellness Team comprised of office and field staff that organize programs like Healthy Cooking workshops, Food as Medicine with Marc Ramirez, a former U of M football player, the Great American Smoke out to encourage and assist employees with quitting smoking and many more.

Americans use preventive services at about half the recommended rate, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Although preventive care can save money, time and allow for a more enjoyable life few people take full advantage of it. Thornton & Grooms prides itself on its team-focused culture and has decided to work with their employees to reach good health by taking advantage of preventive healthcare and proactive lifestyle changes.

Each month Thornton & Grooms hosts safety trainings that focus on ways to stay safe while working. These meetings also address how to prevent bodily injuries or issues that tend to be ignored, from lifting from the knees to stretches that can minimize or eliminate lower back pain.

According to the CDC, "employee health frequently carries over into better health behavior that impact both the employee and their family (such as nutritious meals cooked at home or increased physical activity with the family), employees may miss less work caring for ill family members as well."

Thornton & Grooms is dedicated to encouraging employee health at work and home and supporting a culture that increases healthy lifestyles. Introducing a healthy work culture can be just the boost your business and employees need.
