MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The Nexstar Legacy Foundation (the Foundation) today announced it has recently awarded more than $60,000 in scholarships to advance careers in the plumbing, heating, cooling and electric (PHCE) trades.

The Foundation also provides scholarships through its Troops to Trades program, which is specifically aimed to match veterans looking for solid careers with an industry facing a shortage of qualified technicians. This year, three United States military veterans received all-expense paid training through the Troops to Trades program to either the Lennox “Build a Tech” program or the Nexstar Network Service System Training:

  • Thad David, Denver, CO
  • Abimael Feliciano, Clearwater, FL
  • James Fitzgerald, Springfield, MA

Additional Foundation scholarships have been awarded to non-military individuals planning to manage or operate a business in the PHCE industries or who are currently working toward a technical degree. Seven individuals received scholarships to advance their education and training for careers in the trades:

  • Richard Driesen, Sunnyside, WA
  • Christian Garcia, Ellensburg, WA
  • Andrew Genevro, Brockport, PA
  • Sam Gumbert, Allenport, PA
  • Sarah Masters, Newark, DE
  • Logan Messmer, Jasper, IN
  • Carlos Reynosa, San Antonio, TX

The importance of supporting those interested in becoming trained technicians in the PHCE service industry is underlined by the increasing average age of technicians currently working in the field. The PHCE industry is vital to the health and well-being of families across the country providing quality air, clean water and safe homes, and this industry is currently facing a shortage of qualified technicians. In addition, the need for military veterans for solid careers in the civilian sector is high. The White House announced that 34,000 troops are expected to return to the US in 2013. The foundation’s scholarships address these two vital needs.

Since its formation in November 2005, the Nexstar Legacy Foundation has awarded nearly 50 scholarships totaling $210,000 to train and educate technicians, managers and owners within the PHCE industry. Scholarships include: The Frank Blau Jr. Award; The Barnett Scholarship; The George Brazil Scholarship; The Jill Reed Women in Business Honorary Scholarship; The Jim Potts Military Scholarship; and technician scholarships awarded to honor John MacGregor.
