A. O. Smith Electric Products Co. is supplying the first high-voltage hermetic motors to Carrier Corp. A sample motor supplied to Carrier early in 2007 successfully passed weeks of testing driving Carrier’s centrifugal compressor. The insulation system has successfully passed material compatibility tests based on UL 984 and also voltage endurance tests and surge tests based on IEEE 1043 and IEEE 522.
"Historically, the market has required voltages from 200 volts through 6900 volts," says Christopher Mapes, president of Electrical Products Co. "However, in recent years, a demand has developed for hermetic motors at voltages up to 11KV." The motors are being supplied to Carrier from A. O. Smith's plant in Yueyang, China. Yueyang has been supplying the China market with motors up to 10KV and is one of only two manufacturers in the world of hermetic motors in the 10KV/11KV voltage class. These high-voltage motors and centrifugal compressors are mainly used in chiller applications.
