Tecumseh has recently signed “The Natural Voice”, a global call for action supported by industry and research that points to the environmental, economic, and social potential of natural refrigerants in heating, cooling, and refrigeration.
Following the launch of its “Green Technology” initiative, in which the company committed resources to optimizing compressors and condensing units for use with low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants, Tecumseh is focused on developing hydrocarbon refrigerants R290 (propane) and R600a (isobutane) which have ozone depletion potential factors of zero, and a fraction of the global warming potential (GWP) of those refrigerants they are intended to replace.
The company’s family of eco-friendly compressors now numbers more than 150 models, following the global launch of the all-new AE2 fractional horsepower compressor for commercial refrigeration earlier this year. The AE2 compressor is optimized for use with both R290 (propane) and R600a (isobutane).
Hydrocarbon refrigerants are already being used successfully in many parts of the world. They are expected to be authorized in the United States for use in commercial and residential refrigeration applications this year, due to approval of the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
