Tjernlund Products, Inc., presents the XCHANGER, an energy-saving fan that is capable of automatically and simultaneously ridding basements or other areas of stale, musty or smelly air and drawing in fresh outside air.
The fan is installed in an outside wall and features two reversible 90 CFM fans that can be positioned to move air in either direction. The user has three options:
- exhaust air from the interior
- draw outside air into the home
- reverse one fan for balanced air exchange with no bypass from either air stream
The company says although the initial cost of the XCHANGER is comparable to a dehumidifier, the dual fans in the XCHANGER use 35 watts of electricity compared with more than 1000 watts for the typical portable dehumidifier.
In basement applications, the XCHANGER is normally installed through an opening in the rim joist between floor joists, the company says. Electrical cords from each fan are plugged into a control box that is plugged into a standard electrical outlet. The control senses the amount of humidity and automatically turns the XCHANGER on or off.
The XCHANGER CFM performance complies with ASHRAE 62.2-2007 for homes up to 7,500 square feet and 7 bedrooms.
Optional accessories include a timer control, fan speed control plus a duct takeoff for use when the XCHANGER is not located in the room being ventilated.
Besides basements, other applications for the XCHANGER include supplying makeup air for stoves and fireplaces, ventilating storage areas and garages plus maintaining fresh interior air in cabins during long vacancy periods.
