The pace of business slows for HVAC contractors during the milder months of fall and spring, and in moderate climates this can make for a string of seemingly never-ending slow months. By offering service contracts now, and throughout the winter, contractors can increase and sustain their income during the slow spring period.
Service contracts are a way that our HVAC contractor customers can keep business consistently coming in during the slower times of the year, said Billy Jobe, regional sales manager for Comfort Supply, a wholesaler of Ruud HVAC equipment. If a customer has set up a service contract, they can schedule routine maintenance during the slow months and keep their crews busy.
Jobe added that usually service contracts include priority treatment for customers and a discount for the homeowner when a repair needs to be done.
The best way to sell a service contract is to be honest. Tell homeowners that regular, preventative maintenance to a HVAC system cuts down on repair costs for the life of the unit. With a service contract, a professional will ensure that the homeowners unit operates at peak efficiency, saving homeowners money on their utility bills.
Mention to homeowners the full cost of HVAC replacement parts if their unit needs servicing and they are not covered by a service contract. Compare the preventative maintenance of an HVAC system to something the homeowner will understand, like getting an oil change, or using a drycleaner to extend the life of their clothes.
The homeowner benefits from having a clean, energy efficient HVAC system, and your business benefits from the steady income during all months of the year, Jobe said.
