Arrowhead Credit Union recently installed an Ice Bear® unit to provide demand-reducing air conditioned cooling for their branch in the city of Redlands. The Ice Bear unit is expected to reduce the air conditioning peak demand by more than 20% at the 5,500 square foot facility.
The Night Shift Program provides incentives to retrofit roof-top air conditioners with the Ice Bear hybrid air-conditioning units from Ice Energy. The Ice Bear system freezes water in a storage tank at night when electricity costs are lower. During the day, the stored ice cools the refrigerant in the rooftop unit and reduces the energy needed by the air conditioner. As a result, the complete system can cut peak cooling demand by up to 95 percent during the peak energy periods on hot days.
According to Ron Kliewer, Construction Project Manager at Arrowhead Credit Union, “We are always looking to implement creative ways to save energy on utility expenses while at the same time improving the look and feel of our branches. With the use of various SCE programs, we’ve been able to partner with SCE on many projects that might otherwise never have left the drawing board."
The Night Shift Program is available for small to mid-commercial customers which have buildings with 3 to 20-ton rooftop air-conditioner units and are billed on a time-of-use electric demand charge. Facilities that fit this profile typically include office buildings, libraries, school and university buildings, and big box retail stores. Customers who participate in the program are eligible to receive a financial incentive and technical assistance to help offset some of the equipment and installation costs. They can also realize ongoing energy savings based on time-of-use electricity rates that reward off-peak consumption.
