AccuClean Sets IAQ Standard
American Standard says its AccuClean filtering device removes up to 99.98% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns from its very first use. AccuClean can be installed in new systems, or as an upgrade to American Standard systems installed up to 10 years ago. Later this year, the company expects to launch a version that can be retrofitted onto competitors systems. Like other electronic air cleaners (EACs), AccuClean is designed to attract and charge the airborne particles, which are then attracted and collected on an oppositely charged surface. However a patented intense field dielectric (ifD) technology catches more particles, more consistently, at almost twice the efficiency.
AccuCleans field charger has a lattice of large holes through which all system air and airborne particles pass.Centered in each opening is an ion-emitting needle, instead of the ionizing wires used in other EACs. Each AccuClean needle creates a cone-shaped, intense 24-volt electric field that delivers a strong, consistent charge throughout the opening, catching even the smallest particle.AccuClean ifD collection system is a densely packed grid of smooth-sided, rectangular cells that create a surface area seven times greater than other EACs. By using a proprietary dielectric material, the system dissipates the particle charge slowly, leaving room for additional charged particles to be collected. The layers of cells are only 0.08 in. apart, yet have the opposite charge, creating a stronger collection field without the arcing and popping of traditional air cleaners.
When airborne particles get trapped, filters get clogged and ionizing wires get a build-up that insulates the wires and reduces their effectiveness. In both cases, less air goes through them, meaning less air gets cleaned. AccuCleans needle design minimizes particle buildup on the ion emitters. Customers can clean AccuCleans collection grid themselves with a vacuum or a hose two to four times each year. A light on the front of the panel indicates when cleaning is needed. Safety interlocks shut down the power automatically whenever the easy-access panel is opened for maintenance. For more information: Visit www.americanstandardair.com.

Grundfos Expands Wet Rotor Circulator Line
Grundfos has added four new pumps to its line of VersaFlo multi-speed wet-rotor circulators, which improves the lines retrofit and replacement capabilities. The shorter flange-to-flange pump length, with matching flanges, make the pumps an easy drop-in replacement of other pumps without the need for pipe modifications.
VersaFlo circulators are designed so that water being pumped surrounds the rotor cooling and lubricating the shaft and bearings. Wet-rotor design eliminates the need for a fan, often a source of noise and vibration, to cool the motor. Pump and motor are integrated and built by Grundfos for greater ease of installation and durability. The pumps are seal-free, and so do not require lubricants or coupler replacements. They are also self-venting.
Both cast iron and bronze VersaFlo UP(S) pumps have dynamically balanced rotors and laser-welded, stainless steel, curved blade impellers to achieve the highest pump efficiency. Standard VersaFlo motors are suitable for variable- speed drive applications. VersaFlo UPS pumps have a two- or three-speed switch, which enhances fluid control and comfort level. The designer, installer, or user can select the speed required. UP motors are single-speed, dual voltage. All VersaFlo pumps provide indicator lights for on/off, correct rotation, and trouble-shooting.

Furnaces Designed for Flexibility
Johnson Controls York Affinity Series furnaces provide more flexibility. The 80% downflow models have been adapted to downflow/horizontal, a new magnetic door design on the top and bottom makes it easier for contractors to open, and a line of 95% AFUE single-stage models is being developed. These high-efficiency gas furnaces are designed for easy installation and service, including easily removed access panels and a clean layout.
Inside, this series of furnaces have enhanced electronically commutated motor programming on most models. They are designed to provide continuous gradual fan speed changes for better humidity control, reduced sound levels, and better comfort. Also, they use hot-surface ignition, which can reduce costs up to 30% compared with most furnaces that are as old as 20 years.
The York ClimaTrak comfort system lets installers customize an operating cycle in the cooling mode specific to the climate dry, temperate or humid in which units operate.

Lennox Introduces Ozone-free IAQ Products
Lennox Industries, a division of Lennox International Inc., has announced the introduction of a comprehensive line of residential indoor air quality (IAQ) products that do not produce ground-level ozone. The product line, Healthy Climate IAQ, includes air-purification systems, media air cleaners, high-efficiency particulate (HEPA) filters, ultraviolet germicidal lights, humidifiers and dehumidifiers, and heat- and energy-recovery ventilators.
Indoor air quality products such as electronic air cleaners and portable ionic air purifiers often are used to improve air quality in homes, yet many produce ozone. According to the American Lung Association, ozone exposure may lead to shortness of breath and chest pain when inhaling deeply, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates one out of every three people in the United States is at a higher risk of experiencing problems from ground-level ozone.

Furnace Removes up to 99% of Airborne Allergens
The new XV90i gas furnace from Trane has the company’s CleanEffects innovation built right in, where it is capable of removing up to 99% of airborne allergens down to 0.3 microns. It’s the same patented whole-house technology in the company’s breakthrough CleanEffects system accessory that is 100 times more effective than the typical one-inch filters used in most homes. Air flows freely through the CleanEffects filter with a low pressure drop and the highest efficiency possible, without the arcing and popping of conventional electronic air cleaners. The cleanable filter never needs to be replaced.
Trane has integrated key control functions into one microelectronic system that monitors the thermostat and gas valve in the XV90i. The variable-speed blower with Comfort-R mode constantly adjusts the system for maximum efficiency and comfort; allows a preset delay, which provides greater humidity control in cooling; eliminates noisy start-up and shut down; and helps distribute warm air more evenly.
The XV90i is rated up to 93%+ AFUE, has self-diagnostic controls, a heavy-steel insulated cabinet, and a durable pre painted finish.

Honeywell Introduces Current Sensors and Switches
Honeywell has introduced a line of current sensors and controls that offer a higher operating range and an extremely low trip point. The sensors are rated at 250 amps, so customers can meet high-amp situations without the need for a transformer. The trip point is 0.12.
Available current sensors include the CTS-20 and CTP-20 with 4-20mA output; the CTS-05 and CTP-05 with a 0-5VDC output; and the CTS-10 and CTP-10 with a 0-10VDC output. Current switches include the CSS solid core fixed and adjustable, and the CSP split core fixed and adjustable.
The units feature:
a built-in 35 mm DIN rail mounting flange, which reduces the need for accessory clips;
a split core, which eliminates the need to power down or disconnect wires during installation;
very low operating current measurement; and
reduced installation time because fewer wire loops are needed.
The units will detect current flow and transmit to a building-management system, DDC, or PLC controller. Current transmitters measure the level of operating current and can be used to monitor equipment or to drive other equipment with modulating output. Both current switches and transmitters can be used to detect a motor failure, belt loss or slippage, or a mechanical failure.

Emerson Introduces Condensing Units
Value-Add SystemPro, Emerson Climate Technologies’ newest addition to its fractional horsepower condensing unit line, includes 26 condensing unit models, ranging from ¼ to ½ horsepower. With factory-installed, sealed and tested EK filter driers, and tri-color hermetic moisture warning indicators already in place, the condensing units significantly reduce the amount of necessary on-site installation supplies, materials, tube prepping, and brazing. Unlike other units that require four on-site braze joints, the Value-Add SystemPro requires only one, preserving the entire unit and protecting it from potential contaminants that can result from on-site brazing.
