Johnstone Supply has announced it will open a new Distribution Center facility in Joliet, Ill. in response to strong sales and demand in the Central and Great Lakes region. The facility is currently under construction but when complete, the company says it will be the new service center for Johnstone’s Midwest locations. It will form an integral part of the company’s regional distribution model to provide customers from across the country with quick and easy access to HVACR products.
“It is a major investment for the Cooperative that we think will more than pay off in terms of enhancing customer service and support,” said Johnstone CEO DeWight Wallace in a company statement. “This new facility will allow Johnstone stores to significantly expand their region-specific product offerings and improve inventory availability at the local store level.”
The Illinois Distribution Center (IDC) will become the largest in the Johnstone Supply DC network, covering 236,273 sq-ft. and boasting a state-of-the-art operational layout and IT support system. The Johnstone Supply DC Network, and the addition of the new Illinois DC, are designed to be exceptionally efficient and accurate in fulfilling Johnstone Member requirements for customer orders, including the ability to deliver over 90% of products within 24 hours nationwide. The Joliet facility will begin receiving inventory in January of 2013 and begin shipping operations in February.
“The new IDC will ensure that service and delivery times remain at the highest level in the industry,” stated Ray Kernagis, Johnstone Vice President - Supply Chain. “It was strategically planned to support the Central and Great Lakes region growth and capacity requirements for at least the next 10 years. And, it will help us not only further speed order fulfillment as far west as the Dakotas, it will reduce freight expenses.”
Improvements being made to the existing structure at Joliet’s Southfield Center, a class-A distribution facility, include 8,600 sq-ft. of office space, a HazMat room and more than 30 truck loading docks. The location was in part chosen to benefit logistically from its proximity to the I-80 and I-55 interstate highway corridors.
